The Ups & (Mostly) Downs Of Getting Old.

Hello everyone, it’s me, Spencer, back at last! Sorry I’ve been away so long. There has been a lot going on here and it was difficult to get online. I have been very busy at work and with the pet therapy program at the hospital. Part of my job at the hospital is to help humans rebuild motor skills they lost due to things like strokes and accidents. Well, now it turns out I need some therapy myself! I have some hip dysplasia and last week it combined with arthritis and started to make me feel not very good. I was lying down and resting all over the place…on the lawn…in the park…on the new carpet…

Then this Monday when I was getting ready to leave the hospital, my hips kind of gave out on me. My humans were really worried about me so they took me to see Dr. George at Pet Medical Center to see if he could help me. Dr. George is certified to give acupuncture to dogs. It helps you feel better. I also get some extra strength lubricants for my old joints…a little East / West medicine combination. !

I got to relax and lay on the floor while Dr. George put little tiny needles in key points to help me feel better. I didn’t mind one little bit. He also kept giving me cookies too…mmmm. Don’t tell him, but I don’t need the cookies to stay quiet, BOL! Afterward I felt soooo veeerrry relaxed….yawn! And the best part was I was wagging my tail again.   I like to wag it when I’m happy and laying on the floor. It goes…thump! thump! thump! Later I felt better and got a chewy treat, which I made short work of. I’m going again for another session next week and I’ll try and get HM to bring the camera so you can see me with all my tiny needles!

  1. Sorry you’re not feeling too good. But I hear that accupuncture is great stuff. My Mum has had it done. Really glad it made you feel better. What a relief, huh?

Can’t wait to see those needles sticking out of ya. :) And we would love to feature your pic on our Canine Acupuncture Squidoo lens!

  2. Hey Spencer!
Real shame about your poor old hip – but a what a great wheeze about the keeping quiet cookies!! good work!!

Take it easy old chap, keep that tail a-wagging:)

  3. Hey there Spence.. dang it with these old hips anyway….mine give out a lot, too. Besides the big doses of Glucosamine and chondroitin, mom gives me a supplement called Longevity It’s made by Sprintime. Lots of good stuff in it. http://www.springtimeinc.com/product/121/2 it’s very green… and quess what else comes out green…bol !! plus I get a baby aspirin every morning. I know your humans love you very much and will do anything to make you more comfy. Mom got a new book by Dean Koontz called “The Darkest Evening of the Year” and it has golden retrievers in it!! Take care Spence…you did a great job on the bathroom!

  4. Oh Spencer we are soooo happy you are back! Sorry to hear you are having hip trouble. I too am starting to get sore hips but they definitely do not need needles yet. Boy you are brave. I start yelping at the vet as soon as I see the needles and the vet is across the room. But I am glad they are making you feel better. Hang in there buddy!

    Lots of licks,

    Gracie

  5. Hi, Spencer!
I am so sorry you are having health problems. Sure is nice to have a great vet who helps you to feel better.
I live that picture of you with your chewy!
    Have a great weekend
    Take care

  6. Spencer we are SO glad you are back. We are really sorry about your hips and arthritis though . We both have arthritis and it hurts a lot sometimes, especially when its really hot or cold out. And one of us had to have two hip surgeries already so we’re the bionic dogs. We hope you get lots more chewy treats out of the deal and we hope the acupuncture keeps helping.

    Take care Spencer,.

  7. I was a bit worried about your absence Spencer. My dogs go to a doggy doc that
does accupuncture too. She also has natural meds that helped with a ‘trick’ knee.
I hope you are feeling better. I live in the desert and the dry air feels better than the
damp air near the ocean but it has been damp here too lately. Big hugs to you
and your human folks from the big goldens here at my house.

  8. Spencer, I’m sorry to hear about your health problems but glad you have a doctor who is helping you. You are very brave to get those needles put in you.

    Feel better soon,

    Levi and the mom
