The Thrill Of The Hunt.

Yesterday morning I got up early and went to a park that is famous for having lots of squirrels. I’ve even been told that my humans last dog, Raja, once caught a squirrel here! They say they don’t know who was more shocked, Raja or he squirrel, BOL! Once I got to the park I gave the terrain the once over.

I quickly spotted the enemy. Seems he was watching me too.

I put my super duper nose to work and started sniffing for trails. Those sneaky squirrels know I have a hard time seeing them if they don’t move, so they stay motionless when I’m close. What they don’t know is I can smell their trail all the way up to where they are standing, hee, hee, hee!

My nose found me what I was looking for….a squirrel. I even saw him too. Years of genetics took over and I pointed right away.

Then very, very quietly I stalked up to him. The trick is to use very smooth, slow motion and stay low to the ground.

I got so close we were eye to eye. Can you see him there just off my left ear? Just as I was about to pounce that guy in the upper left hand corner made some noise and the squirrel ran away. Humans…sheesh!

He ran all the way to the top of the tree. He’s lucky I’m not very good at climbing!

It didn’t matter that I didn’t catch a squirrel, I had a great time hunting so many of them! As soon as one was treed, I’d scan the horizon for another. It was a really fun morning!

  1. Heya Spencer,
Great squirrel hunt. We live in the woods so we have them in our paddock. We even have those little Chip & Dale critters but they’re a million times faster than the fat squirrels. You have a good hunting instinct and a lot of patience; and you don’t have Newfoundlands to bark at the squirrels to scare them away . Duh!

  2. Those pesky varmints!! did they call you names as they ran up the tree?
We used to live near a park with lots of squirrels – wot rascals they are!
i like the seagulls we have here MUCH better :)) even if they do try to poop on my head sometimes !

  4. Thank you for showing pictures of the squirrel. Me’s never seen one of them but next time I go to the park I’m going to look for my own to chase. You have a nice park to go to.

  5. Spencer we think you did a great job hunting the squirrels. They must know now not to mess with you. We know how you feel about not being able to climb up after them. Always bums us out, too.

You should join the Squirrel Patrol Club over at Chasing Squirrels with Rusty. Anydog can join and we;re all united in the fight against these “squirrely” pests.
