Remembering Spencer

spencer3

It is  5 months today that we lost Spencer to hemangiosarcoma. There is not a day goes by that we don’t remember Spencer, sometimes with a few tears but mostly with a smile or laugh.  This week was our 13th wedding anniversary and it made me remember  the trip we took up to Carmel for our  anniversary last summer. Spencer came along and we all had the best time. He was so eager to explore new places and enjoyed it the most when we were all together.

He made the trip a lot more fun just being there.

Spencer was at home anywhere…the hospital, anyone’s home, even on a shopping trip. He was like an old friend even if you just met him. He had an “old soul” and if you looked into his deep dark brown eyes you felt everything was wonderful.

And of course, he was famous for carrying 3 tennis balls at a time in his mouth. This picture must have made many smile and it still makes me grin until my face hurts.

Spencer is a true testament to the joy rescuing “old Gold” can bring to your life (and the lives of so many others as in Spencer’s case). No one truly knows how much time we have with those we love but if you treasure every minute, it lasts you a lifetime. We knew we may not have long when we adopted Spencer at 8 1/2 years old but it didn’t matter, he was pure love and we would do it all over in a heartbeat.

We miss you big guy.

  1. Oh what a lovely tribute to the big guy! It still saddens me to think he is gone and can’t believe it has been 5 month already. I lost a golden girl 11 years ago and I still shed a tear or two every now and then. They are truly a joy! That’s probably why we have 2 now.

    Thinking of Spence today!

  5. What a wonderful tribute. We too miss Spencer dearly, we miss his three tennis balls in the mouth trick, his sentimental soul, his beautiful eyes, and his love of life. He was a wonderful specimen of a Golden and one day you guys will be reunited with him!

Love to you and always to Spencer,

  6. Had to check in on this wonderful post remembering the wonderful Spencer. Such great memories and photos – thank you so much for posting – even though I didn’t “know” him long, he was quickly one of my best blogger pals – we just loved him and often think of him. I’m a rescue too, but even though I came to my pawrents at nine months old, I was riddled with kidney disease, most of which was gone a year later. I love my furever home, but my folks tell me they love me more hehe!
Thanks again for these wonderful Spencer memories.
    Hugs xo

  8. aww Spencer…

though we’ve never met Spencer personally, we know him through his stories and his pictures – he was, and will always be, a wonderful, great dog with a pure kind heart.

    p/s: happy wedding anniversary!

  9. We remember Spencer as a dear friend we never got the chance to meet in
person. I mention what is going on in your blog often to the family here and
refer to you as Spencer’s folks. It warms my heart that you were able to share
the time Spencer had. He was a lucky pooch and you two were pretty lucky yourselves.
We share our home with 2 great goldens. They are terrific but the dog of my
life is missed every day. We lost our Lea 6 years ago. Everyone that met her loved her. She was my special pal. I will miss her forever. The memories
    will always be cherished.
Thank you for doing such a great job sharing your time wth Spencer.
Congrats on your Anniversary! May you two have many more happy years together!

  10. All dog lovers who have lost one of their dear friends know just how you feel. That little place in your heart never truly heals. Wonderful tribute to a fine dog.

  11. Spencer
We too miss you even though we never met you in person. We always read your stories, and cried for days when you got sick.
I hope you are running around with many tennis balls.
    We will always remember you

  12. Thanks for sharing some memories about Spencer. He was such a beautiful dog and I wish I had found your blog years ago so I could have watched him through your eyes.

  13. Even though we never had the pleasure of his company in person, we love Spencer like an old friend. Thanks for helping us to remember to love every precious minute with our fur kid!

  14. Here I am, in Algarve, in a 3-speedy-days of vacation, leacking because of this post. It’s so weird, we’ve never been with Spencie, but it really feels like we lost an old friend. I wish we could’ve meet him. Pipa would LOVE to play with Spencer! But that’s the way life goes and we’re so sure Spencie is looking after his family, wherever he is! :)

    Hello there, sweet Spencer!

    :)

    Love

    Pipa and family

  15. Oh!!! It’s so good to see pictures of Spencer!!! It seems like yesterday, and at the same time, it seems like ages ago! I wonder how many Golden’s Spencer has taught to hold 3 balls in the mouth, in heaven!!! I can just see it now, when I get there, all these Golden’s will come to greet me and all of them will have 3 balls in their mouths!!! What a glorious sight that will be! We hope you are doing well. We definitely enjoy all your blogs about all the precious Goldens you help out! God Bless You!
