The Devil’s Punchbowl

What is Kona so happy about?

He’s finally got a day off and he’s going hiking! This hike is in the desert mountains a couple of hours outside of Los Angeles at a place called the Devil’s Punchbowl, amazing geological formations practically on the infamous San Andreas fault. The boys find the trail head.

Our hike will take us down into the punchbowl 300 feet from our start at 4750 feet.

There are huge boulders and compressed rock slabs everywhere.

Looking up from halfway down the bowl.

Kona takes a careful peek over the edge of a boulder…

To find there is a creek running through the bottom of the bowl. With more water, cottonwood and willow trees can grow there. They were in full fall colour.

Kona was more than happy to walk through the creek…even though there wasn’t enough water for a swim.

Looking up from the creek bed…

Heading back up the punchbowl has some great views you have to stop for.

The boys back at the top of the bowl.

Another trail leads up to an 8400 foot peak and a great overview of the punchbowl. When you near the 7000 foot elevation pine trees overtake desert scrub. Since we got a late start, we only made a few miles up the big trail before having to turn around before dark.

Back at home Kona crashed out on the sofa after his big adventure.
