Kona’s Arizona Adventure-Part 1

For Thanksgiving, Kona took a big road trip to Arizona. First stop: the Grand Canyon.

Thanksgiving Day was chilly with highs of 32F (0C) and lows of 4F (-16C) but it was a beautiful morning to hike the South Rim. The boys were eager to get hiking at sunrise. (Leashed dogs are allowed on the South Rim developed trails but not on trails into the Canyon.)

The canyon is 277 miles long, up to 18 miles wide at points and a mile deep. It takes a bit for it all to sink in how vast it really is. Even Kona sat and appreciated this natural wonder.

There was snow in some of the forested parts of the trial and shaded areas of the canyon. We’re pretty sure this is the first time Kona saw snow. Initially he was a bit of a SoCal dog but he quickly warmed up to walking in snow. Here he’s looking at some elk grazing across the way. (They were too far to get a good snap).

We spent the day hiking 16 miles around the South Rim and finished up with a beautiful sunset.

Back at the hotel, Kona crashed out on his bed and slept deeply from all that exercise.

He had to rest up for the adventure continues tomorrow…

  4. Kona I know this isn’t a problem you have often, but what did you do with the ice balls you got between your paws? Our golden Harlow LOVES to dig in the snow in our yard in Montana, but then skates around on the ice balls when she comes inside! Any advice?
