The Joys of Spaziness

In the few days since he’s been here, Sunny is fitting in nicely to our little family. He’s got all the usual puppy spazziness (or “puppy brain” as I like to call it), but he settles in nicely once he’s burned off that excess energy.

We are working hard on manners and Sunny has mastered “Sit”-plopping his puppy butt on the ground quickly at the word. He’s also go the hang of “Leave it” which comes in handy as an alternative to “No”. He recalls so fast we have to watch out for him crashing into us. Other commands we’re working on are “Stay”, “Find it” and “Off”.

It seems Sunny is a little agility prodigy-we have a course of tunnels (IKEA!) set up for him, which he loves to race through. He’s a bit of a jumper, as the field Goldens usually are, so once he’s grown enough, I’m sure he’ll be a natural at the hurdles.

One goal we have for Sunny is to have him be a therapy dog, like Spencer and Kona were. Part of his training for this is being exposed to all sorts of things and situations, so he can be confident and calm in any situation. Until he has all his vaccines, that’s limited to noises around the house and work. So far Sunny is unfazed by practically everything. He didn’t even bat an eye at the vacuum or the garbage trucks rumbling down the street. At a trip to the vet this week, he was very calm and sat patiently for his exam.

He’s a very observant puppy and keenly watches everything. Here he is watching out the window…

After a full day of play Sunny likes to snuggle up on the sofa with us.

And in case pictures of Sunny give anyone a case of “Puppy Fever”, let me remind you about a few of the behind the scenes action:

-up at 2am for a pee

-up at 5:30am-full on puppy spaz (if you’re not a morning person like I am, this is hard-lots of coffee helps)

-sharp little puppy teeth (need I say more?)

-watching every little move (puppies are fast and curious & EVERYTHING goes in their mouth)

It’s like having a very fast fuzzy baby with razor sharp teeth. Of course when you’re dead tired, it all melts away when the little fuzzball plops himself down next to you and you catch a whiff of puppy breath:)

On a side note…Sunny now has his own facebook page.

  1. My, oh my. Aren’t you a delightful little surprise?
Please tell your peeps good luck – we recently babysat a wee one for 5 days. 5 extremely long days, which we affectionately refer to as the reign of Pearly Baker terror. My fondest memories of our little guest are when she was sleeping….
Kidding aside, so very happy for you and even happier to see this lad might be more red than blonde.

    • Thanks Ben. Ha, ha-love this “the reign of Pearly Baker terror”! Hopefully ours will be downgraded to “rReign of inconvenience” in a bit so we can catch up on our sleep:)
I’m pretty sure he’s going to be pretty red when he grows up, he’s getting redder by the day. We love the redheads:)

  2. Congrats on you new family addition. What a beauty. I forgot about the 2 am potty runs 9 years ago when we got a pup. Yikes was that a surprise. I can’t wait to hear about all the fun and adventures you all are about to embark on. Best wishes for a healthy long life dear sweet Sunny. He sure got in the right line for good parents!

    • Thanks Taria. Yep, puppies are a handful…we had a few foster pups to remind us, but they usually get adopted pretty quick-Sunny is here to stay so we’re owning the spaziness:)
