Puppy Party

04 Sep

Late Friday night, a trio of trouble showed up to spend the night. Three 9 week old Golden puppies.

You forget how tiny Goldens are when they’re pups…even a soccer ball looks huge.

Kona likes to sleep in…he slept through the late night pee breaks but he wasn’t impressed with the 6am wake up call…3 puppies crying. Once out of their pen, they were full of energy.

This little guy was very observant.

The other baby boy sits still for a minute.

Breakfast is served.

Kona and  big sister wagging at each other.

Pile ‘o puppies.

Chilling after a good play.

After an action packed morning, the pups got a transport to rescue. You can read about their story on Ben’s blog, whose mom came to the rescue of these cuties. We’re sure they’ll be adopted in a heartbeat and wish them all wonderful forever homes. Travel safe kids!

A Day At The Beach

21 Jul

After working like maniacs for months we took a day off and spent it at the beach. The weather was perfect and Kona had a great time. It was a real joy to see how confident and happy he was, a marked change from the first time he was at the beach. Even though it was an on-leash beach, there was plenty of space to enjoy.

The boys scoped out the entire beach end to end.

We hope everyone is having a great summer and we’ll try to come and see you soon!

Kona-East Canyon Hike

25 Apr

After a long work week, Kona’s big adventure this weekend was a hike up the East Canyon Trail in Santa Clarita’s Woodlands Park. Just north of Los Angeles, this is a  3.8 mile trail in the Santa Susana Mountains. The vegetation is lush and the trail winds though three species of oak, bay laurel, black walnut, big leaf maple and a forest of douglas fir growing at unusually low altitude.

The trail starts out winding along a creek at an elevation of 1500 feet.

It was a bright sunny day and there were many geckos and lizards along the way. This lizard was sunning himself in the morning rays.

After the first climb, a forest of douglas fir (upper right corner) are revealed in a very green valley. These trees usually grow at higher elevations so this forest is somewhat of an anomaly.

The guys check out a ravine. The rocks here are some of the oldest in California with some dating back 1.7 billion years. The land is rich in oil and if you hike up the neighboring Rice Canyon it can sometimes be spotted seeping up.

Taking a rest under a huge old oak tree with great views.

Continuing on into a mountain meadow.

A gorgeous valley view.

The boys pose at the summit of 26oo feet.

It was the perfect day for this hike, not too hot and even though it’s a steady incline, the round trip 8 mile hike can be done in 3 hours at a nice pace. Be sure to keep an eye out for mountain bikers on their way down the trail and the occasional equestrian hiker.

Kona was pooped after his hike and had a nap in the shade of the lemon tree, no doubt dreaming of chasing geckos.

Kona-Birthday Hike

12 Apr

Kona sets out on his birthday hike at Wildwood Park in Ventura County.

First part of the hike was up the Santa Rosa Trail to the summit of the hills. The view was pretty good even half way up and there were wildflowers and wild oats everywhere.

Lots of water breaks, even on a partly cloudy day.

Kona checks out the view from the top. We came from that path in the middle and will be heading back down to the green hill in the middle where there is a valley and a waterfall.

Looking down into the valley on the way to Paradise Falls.

At the falls, Kona jumps into the creek to cool off. There is lots of shade from oak trees.

Paradise Falls.

Hiking back to the car through a meadow. The peaks in the distance were the ones we scaled earlier.

All that hiking worked up a good appetite so we grilled up a storm of chicken kabobs, asparagus and sweet potatoes. Kona ate his before we could get a picture:)
