Puppy Party

04 Sep

Late Friday night, a trio of trouble showed up to spend the night. Three 9 week old Golden puppies.

You forget how tiny Goldens are when they’re pups…even a soccer ball looks huge.

Kona likes to sleep in…he slept through the late night pee breaks but he wasn’t impressed with the 6am wake up call…3 puppies crying. Once out of their pen, they were full of energy.

This little guy was very observant.

The other baby boy sits still for a minute.

Breakfast is served.

Kona and  big sister wagging at each other.

Pile ‘o puppies.

Chilling after a good play.

After an action packed morning, the pups got a transport to rescue. You can read about their story on Ben’s blog, whose mom came to the rescue of these cuties. We’re sure they’ll be adopted in a heartbeat and wish them all wonderful forever homes. Travel safe kids!

Niko

07 Jan

Over the holidays we got to foster this little whipper snapper, Niko, for a few days. At 3 months old he is a typical Golden Retriever pup…full of energy, mouthy, smart and very inquisitive. He knew his name and we taught him “sit” in a matter of minutes. Stay was another story.

Golden puppies are cute but they are a handful, not for couch potatoes, really busy people or those with an aversion to being mouthed constantly with tiny needle like puppy teeth. People tend to ignore or fail to research all this and I think that’s why so many Golden’s end up in rescue. They are great dogs but they need A LOT of exercise and attention. Which brings me to what I love about old Gold… house trained, happy just to get fed regularly, have an occasional ball thrown, a few stuffies and content to snuggle up with you. Sure some have some issues to work through from prior neglect but compared to a puppy, they are a walk in the park. We love to have the pups come through now and then because they are a lot of fun but we get a lot more rest when they are adopted:)

Niko was promptly adoped when he reached Homeward Bound and is burning off energy zipping around his new home.

Return of the Sun

16 Oct

Kona (9)

The sun was back in full force here in Los Angeles today with highs in the low 80′s.  After work, Kona and I decided to get some vitamin D and hang out in the yard. He figured helping with gardening meant he had to be IN the garden.

After some garden maintenance, we goofed around taking some photos. Kona is always a wiling model.

We played with the macro lens and flowers…except I had to work fast because there was a nose in the next shot.

After all that and a big walk, there was a little time for a nap in the grass before sundown.

Rainy Day

15 Oct

It has actually rained here in Los Angeles for the past 2 days…really rained, not just a little drizzle. We really needed it and now everything is green and happy. Kona was getting cabin fever because we missed our walk last night, so when it started to clear late this afternoon we headed out for some fun. Kona decided he wanted to play with the frisbee and brought it to me.

He doesn’t actually catch it while it’s in the air but once he picks it up he likes to toss it around for fun as he runs around.

There’s usually a few bouts of chewing in between retrieves.

Then some more flipping and prancing…Kona definitely has his own frisbee style.

And once he’s tired out, he nods off contented.
